This post is mostly just going to be reporting. You’ll get my thoughts and predictions on who should win and who will win as the Oscars draw closer, but there are a few more films I want to see first. So for now, here’s the list of nominees in each category, along with a few thoughts on the nominees and who may have been snubbed.

Best Picture
“Argo”
“Django Unchained”
“Les Miserables”
“Life of Pi”
“Amour”
“Lincoln”
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Zero Dark Thirty”
“Beasts of the Southern Wild”

Can’t really argue with this list. There was some notion that “The Master” or even “Skyfall” might get nominated; I haven’t seen “The Master,” but I wasn’t high on “Skyfall” so I’m glad it didn’t sneak in. I would have liked to see “The Hobbit” in there, but I know I liked it a lot more than the general public. Plus it skews away from the average Academy voter.

Actor in a Leading Role
Bradley Cooper – “Silver Linings Playbook”
Daniel Day-Lewis – “Lincoln”
Hugh Jackman – “Les Miserables”
Joaquin Phoenix – “The Master”
Denzel Washington – “Flight”

I haven’t seen “Flight” or “The Master” yet, but I thought Jamie Foxx deserved a nomination for his work in “Django Unchained.” Richard Gere not being nominated for “Arbitrage” will probably be seen as a snub, too. At some point, though, you have to cap the list.

Actress in a Leading Role
Jessica Chastain – “Zero Dark Thirty”
Jennifer Lawrence – “Silver Linings Playbook”
Emmanuelle Riva – “Amour”
Quvenzhané Wallis – “Beasts of Southern Wild”
Naomi Watts – “The Impossible”

Although I haven’t seen it, I think a fair number of people will be surprised Marion Cotillard didn’t get nominated for “Rust and Bone.” It’s kind of neat to see Quvenzhane Wallis get nominated, but I think this is probably a three person race among the three ladies at the top of this list.

Supporting Actor
Alan Arkin – “Argo”
Robert De Niro – “Silver Linings Playbook”
Philip Seymour Hoffman – “The Master”
Tommy Lee Jones – “Lincoln”
Christoph Waltz – “Django Unchained”

It’s not that Alan Arkin did a bad job in “Argo,” I just never thought he was prevalent enough in the movie to really deserve the nomination. If it were up to me, I might have replaced him with Leonardo DiCaprio’s Calvin Candy from “Django Unchained.”

Supporting Actress
Amy Adams – “The Master”
Sally Field – “Lincoln”
Anne Hathaway – “Les Miserables”
Helen Hunt – “The Sessions”
Jackie Weaver – “Silver Linings Playbook”

Nothing comes to mind at the moment. Good list.

Best Animated Feature
“Brave”
“Frankenweenie”
“ParaNorman”
“The Pirates! Band of Misfits”
“Wreck-It Ralph”

The only one of any of these movies I’ve seen is “Wreck-It Ralph,” which certainly deserves its nomination. “Hotel Transylvania” is the only movie I can think of that might have cracked this list.

Best Director
“Amour” – Michael Haneke
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” – Benh Zeitlin
“Life of Pi” – Ang Lee
“Lincoln” – Steven Spielberg
“Silver Linings Playbook” – David O. Russell

I’m on board with snubbing Quentin Tarantino. More or less, everything that was wrong in that movie came from questionable directorial choices (well, and I guess some writing issues when it comes to the length of the film). What I can’t figure is how Kathryn Bigelow did not get nominated. That seems criminal to me.

Original Screenplay
“Amour” – Michael Haneke
“Django Unchained” – Quentin Tarantino
“Flight” – John Gatins
“Moonrise Kingdom” – Wes Anderson & Roman Coppola
“Zero Dark Thirty” – Mark Boal

I really am going to have to see “Amour,” aren’t I? It’s on nearly every one of these lists.

Adapted Screenplay
“Argo” – Chris Terrio
“Beasts of the Southern Wild” – Lucy Alibar & Benh Zeitlin
“Life of Pi” – David Magee
“Lincoln” – Tony Kushner
“Silver Linings Playbook” – David O. Russell

Again, I was much higher on “The Hobbit” than most. At the very least, it’s a travesty that “Life of Pi” was nominated here.

Original Song
“Before My Time” from “Chasing Ice,” music and lyrics by J. Ralph
“Everybody Needs a Best Friend” from “Ted,” music by Walter Murphy, lyrics by Seth MacFarlane
“Pi’s Lullaby” from “Life of Pi,” music by Mychael Danna, lyrics by Bombay Jayashri
“Skyfall” from “Skyfall,” music and lyrics by Adele Adkins and Paul Epworth
“Suddenly” from “Les Miserables,” music by Claude-Michel Schönberg, lyrics by Herbert Kretzmer and Alain Boublil

Foreign Language Film
“Amour” (Austria)
“Kon-Tiki” (Norway)
“No” (Chile)
“A Royal Affair” (Denmark)
“War Witch” (Canada)

Cinematography
“Anna Karenina”
“Django Unchained”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Skyfall”

And “Skyfall” sneaks a nomination! I guess there were some cool shots, but it didn’t wow me the same way some other films did. Glad to see “Les Miserables” didn’t make it onto this list.

Costume Design
“Anna Karenina”
“Les Miserables”
“Lincoln”
“Mirror Mirror”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”

“The Hobbit”? Buehler? Buehler?

Best Documentary
“5 Broken Cameras”
“The Gatekeepers”
“How to Survive a Plague”
“The Invisible War”
“Searching for Sugar Man”

Documentary – Short
“Inocente”
“Kings Point”
“Mondays at Racine”
“Open Heart”
“Redemption”

Editing
“Argo”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Silver Linings Playbook”
“Zero Dark Thirty”

This seems like a hard category to judge, particularly when there wasn’t any stylistic quirk to these movies that the editors really had to stay on top of. A good list of nominees, though.

Hair and Makeup
“Hitchcock”
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
“Les Miserables”

Not really sure why this category only has three nominations. Seems like “Anna Karenina” would have garnered some praise here.

“Maggie Simpson in ‘The Longest Daycare'”
“Paperman”

Live-Action Short Film
“Asad”
“Buzkashi Boys”
“Curfew”
“Death of a Shadow (Dood van een Schaduw)”
“Henry”

Sound Editing
“Argo”
“Django Unchained”
“Life of Pi”
“Skyfall”
“Zero Dark Thirty”

Sound Mixing
“Argo”
“Les Miserables”
“Life of Pi”
“Lincoln”
“Skyfall”

Visual Effects
“The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”
“Life of Pi”
“Marvel’s The Avengers”
“Prometheus”
“Snow White and the Huntsman”

And that’s the list of nominees!
